A lesson in surrender

If you let go a little you will have a little peace; if you let go a lot you will have a lot of peace; if you let go completely you will have complete peace. - Ajahn Chah

The appearance of Major Arcana card #12, The Hanged Man, indicates the need for a change of view and a surrendering to life's circumstances. It is necessary to gain a new perspective or understanding about something or someone important in your life. Often times, this lesson involves sacrifice of habitual ways and beliefs. It may also be a call to show up for someone else in a non-selfish compassionate way.

The Hanged Man initiates peaceful change as long as one is willing to empty oneself  of illusion and open to new insight. You are being asked not to force your will upon a situation, allowing for Divine will to guide your actions.

Keywords: Surrender, sacrifice, non-action, submission, in between, letting go, suspension of male energy, understanding, new perspective, restriction, compassion, insight.

Ask yourself, "In what aspect of my life do I need a new perspective? What are the confining thoughts, beliefs and feelings that I am willing to release in order to gain new insight into this situation?"

Process

The Hanged Man represents a choice to sacrifice a lesser ego-based need in favor of a greater, spiritual desire and peace. Faith replaces fear as a new, evolved spiritual point of view replaces old, stagnant conditions.

We shift gear from the small self - motivated by fear and the instinctual drive for physical survival to the soul-spirit self that is characterized by unconditional love and an understanding that nothing of real value can ever be lost or taken away. Everything that is not real ultimately falls away. Whatever is left is the real you and your authentic life.

This is a beautiful opportunity to free yourself from the confines of shame, fear, guilt and doubt. To still your mind and come into union with the wisdom of Source. We learn the real meaning of the famous saying "Let go and let God". Perhaps what needs to be sacrificed are our ideas about how things should be. Only when we allow ourselves to be in a don't know state can we receive guidance. Humility is called for here and your ego may receive a blow in the process.

We learn to be less self centered extending our heart to others with compassionate generosity and goodwill.

When you draw or are drawn to The Hanged Man, you are most likely at the crossroads. You may need to make an important decision and take a leap of faith. It helps to remember that there are no right or wrong choices. Any path will give you something valuable to take with you on your journey to wholeness. Take time to sit with different options and ask for guidance. Practice flexibility and open mindedness. Pray for a fresh perspective and trust that you will be able to decide when the time is right. Indecision will lead to stagnation and eventually depression.

If The Hanged Man shows up reversed you may have to watch for addiction to suffering and victimization, codependency, fear-based possessiveness and a tendency to rescue others putting your needs last. Instead, choose self-love and empowerment.

Healing

If every human being recognized the power of love and forgiveness, all consciousness on earth would change instantly. - Quan Yin

Tend to your inner life and ask for guidance. Stop trying, forcing, and pushing. Work with prayer, affirmation and meditation. Write in your journal. Listen close with your soul.

Do not rush into action. Instead seek quiet. Allow your mind to settle, forgive yourself and set your soul free to the light.

You may want to seek the help of a shamanic practitioner or learn to journey to other realms for yourself. Sandra Ingerman has excellent tapes on shamanic journeying for beginners.

Study the Chinese goddess, Quan Yin, and her message of mercy and compassion. Quan Yin is a shortened form of a name that means One Who Sees and Hears the Cry from the Human World.

When I see this card in a reading, I know I have a somewhat difficult task ahead of me. One of the hardest messages to deliver and receive is the message to let go and surrender to your life's circumstances. If taken on with courage and faith, The Hanged Man will transform and bless your life and the lives of those you love manyfold.

You are at the gateway to a new phase and your new beginning is just around the corner. Be willing to expand your comfort zone, to soften your stance and shift your perspective.Your life will transform in magical ways as a result.

Soulfully,

Victoria
