A lesson in navigating the deep waters of feeling
The eighteenth card of the Major Arcana, The Moon, can be an emotional and mental roller coaster ride.
When you draw this card, know that you have been given an opportunity to feel the complete truth of your life. You must be willing to experience the painful as well as the joyful moments to fully emerge.
Through the expression of our feelings we learn to properly nurture ourselves and become the caretakers that we are meant to be. When we allow ourselves to feel deeply we learn to truly honor the creative feminine source within all of us. Open up and allow your heart to grow.
Distinguishing between feeling and emotion becomes important when dealing with the intense energy of the Moon. Feelings are what you truly feel. Emotions are your reaction to your feelings. Feelings left unexpressed build up and can create disease as they take up space inside and block healthy energy from flowing. The more you learn to accept and acknowledge your feelings, the less time you will spend in emotional turmoil and the more energy you will have to live life.

When the Moon shows up in your reading it is time to slow down, listen, imagine, dream, create and feel deeply. Allow yourself to be called into the realm of the subconscious. Here we make contact with great creativity, intense magic and raw feelings. The only light that can guide you here is your own inner light which makes it a sometimes frightening place to explore. Pray for Divine protection as you navigate these uncharted waters.
You may find it helpful to explore; What emotional cycles keep repeating in my life? On what issues do I need clarity? What am I hiding from others or from myself? What bodily symptoms - cravings, addictions, and stress reactions - do I repeat and what does it say about me? What conditions do I need to establish in order to allow change and receptivity to occur?
The moon often represents a "dark night of the soul" and a challenging time in the journey. When there is understanding and acceptance, we are free to move on to the energetic high of the "Sun" card.
We are acquiring an important skill to be at peace during times of sorrow, absence and the darkness of unknowing. The lesson here is to wait and listen and for this you need a certain inner quiet. You must not allow your fears and insecurities to distort your perception. See if you can relate to the changes in your life with a sense of balance, inner strength, and trust. Avoid jumping to conclusions and getting caught in unnecessary dramas. When you are drawn to this card, your challenge may be to come to peace with unexpected challenges such as major loss, a period of darkness or the ongoing cyclical changes of the moon
Some interpretations of this card indicate great confusion and a kind of temporary madness. I must admit to having felt this way. I am learning not to project or act out, and to be my own audience. It takes a great deal of strength and compassion, when the storm clouds stir our inner sea, and giant waves of emotion wash over and us and threaten to drown out our deeper truth. Learning to differentiate between surface drama and deep feeling becomes crucial. This process is meant to help us know our authentic selves more deeply and break through the barriers that keep us from living our authentic lives.
When you sit with what is, accepting all unconditionally, surrendering into it, peace will come. Feelings change, like clouds moving across the sky.
You may feel uncomfortable and unable to navigate in the dark. It helps to remember that you have a choice. You can either allow yourself to be tossed around by the waves, or channel this potent creative energy into a project that expresses your Higher Self. This is a good time to dialogue with your dreams, artistic expressions, body and intuition. The trick here is to open to it all without getting lost in any of it.
The magic influence of the moon, draws the secret of hidden potentials forward so that we may be nourished by these deeply held qualities of spirit.
Slow down, listen and express yourself. Take long baths soaking in essential oils. Eat well and nourish your body with good rest and sufficient exercise. Stay away from alcohol and drugs. Sugar will leave you feeling depressed and moody. Care for your heart. I will leave you with a quote by the brilliant Clarissa Pinkola Estes.
