Living and creating in rhythm with the moon phases

Studying Shamanism helped me tune into the rhythms and energies of the moon phases, equinoxes and solstices. It felt like calling something lost back to me rather than a new discovery. I knew in my heart, as I found greater alignment, that we were always meant to live and create in harmony with nature and its cycles. Our ancestors certainly knew and lived accordingly.

So many of our habits today aren't natural to our bodies and souls and I believe this is why there is so much stress and anxiety going around. We do not spend enough time connecting out of mind.

One of my personal and professional goals is to be a model for alignment with nature and its cycles. This blog is about the four phases of the moon and their corresponding energies.

The moon is sometimes a male deity depending on the culture or tradition you are studying. I refer to the moon as female, because that is how I experience her.

Follow this link to find out what phase the moon was in when you were born. I was born on the full moon and this is the most energetic time of the month for me. http://spacefem.com/quizzes/moon/

Moon Magic

As long as there has been humans, the moon has been an object of magic and mystery.

It is believed that the moon, like the other planets, exerts a considerable degree of influence on human beings. It has been observed that people suffering from mental ailments invariably have their passions and emotional feelings affected during full moon days. The word 'lunatic' derived from the word 'lunar' (or moon) is most significant and indicates very clearly the influence of the moon on human life. Some people, suffering from various forms of illness invariably find their sickness aggravated during such periods. Researchers have found that certain phases of the moon not only affect humans and animals, but also influence plant life and other elements. Low-tides and high-tides are a direct result of the overpowering influence of the moon.

Our human body consists of about seventy percent liquid. It is accepted by physicians that our bodily fluids flow more freely at the time of full moon. People suffering from asthma, bronchitis and even certain skin diseases, find their ailments aggravated under the influence of the moon. More than five thousand years ago, people had recognized the influence of the moon on cultivation. Farmers were very particular about the effect of the moon on their crops. They knew that certain grains would be affected if blooming took place during a full moon period.

The monthly cycle of the moon, in contrast to the annual cycle of the sun's path, has been implicitly linked to women's menstrual cycles by many cultures. Many of the most well-known mythologies feature female lunar deities, such as the Greek goddesses Phoebe, Artemis, Selene, and Hecate as well as the Chinese goddess Chang'e.

Male lunar gods are also frequent, such as Sin of the Mesopotamians, Mani of the Germanic tribes, and the Japanese god Tsukuyomi.

Also of significance is that many religions and societies are oriented chronologically by the Moon as opposed to the sun. One common example is Hinduism in which the word Chandra means Moon and has religious significance during many Hindu festivals (e.g. Karwa Chauth, Sankasht Chaturthi and during the eclipses).

To Buddhists, there is a special religious significance. The Buddha was born on a full moon day. His renunciation took place on a full moon day. His Enlightenment, the delivery of His first sermon, His passing away into Nibbana and many other important events associated with His life-span of eighty years, occurred on full moon days.

The moon is also worshipped in witchcraft, both in its modern form and in Medieval times, for example, in the cult of Madonna Oriente. It features prominently in art and literature, astrology and theology.

The moon has a four-phase cycle of the new-waxing moon, the full moon, the waning moon and the dark moon. These phases relate directly to the maiden, mother and crone/wise woman goddesses, who reveal themselves within us as we progress through our lives. The male counterparts are bachelor, father and sage/wise man.

Waxing - New Moon (maiden)

Calendars will typically indicate the date of the "new moon" rather than the "dark moon" (the waxing new moon goes from dark to full). The duration of the dark moon is approximately three days and the new moon occurs in the middle of this period so about 1.5 days before the first sliver shows in the sky. For some, the new moon begins with the sight of the first crescent. Others feel its energy on the calendar date. I belong in the first category.

This is the time of the month that corresponds to the maiden and the growth into a full moon. As the moon grows, she will have a magnetic pull on all things, and will strengthen their energies. It is a time for planting, growing, building, developing and strengthening areas in our lives that need attention, as well as physical areas such as an herbal garden.

The New Moon offers an opportunity to start anew and refresh your dreams and/or set new intentions. It is a time of magic and rebirth! I always feel the pace starting to pick up around this time and it builds until the climax of the full moon. The maiden is the tender dreamer we all carry in our hearts regardless of our age and gender. She stands for passion, enthusiasm, romantic love and creativity.

ceremony

Ceremony is recommended on the day of the first sliver/crescent since the dark phase is a resting phase.

COLLECT - items to represent the intention you are empowering. I like to write down that which I long to experience and birth into form by the next full moon.

CLEAR - your energy to get centered. You could take a salt bath or smudge yourself.

GROUND - connect with the directions south, west, north, east and place within/center and their corresponding elements of earth, water, air, fire and ether.

CALL IN HELPING SPIRITS/OPEN SACRED SPACE - I open my altar with song, rattle and bells and I say some prayers. Or, if outside I rattle four times in each direction before I say a prayer and call in the corresponding helpers and powers of each direction. This step can be a s simple as lighting a candle. Use light blue, white, or pink candles to represent the maiden.

SET YOUR INTENTION - share your vision with the new moon in your heart or audibly. I leave my written story at the center of my altar and let it sit there until the cycle is complete with the full moon.

DO ONE SYMBOLIC ACT - light some incense and let the smoke carry your prayers to Source. Sing, dance, drum or rattle. Be creative with this part. Remember to celebrate as if you are already experiencing the manifestation of your intentions.

RELEASE - your helping spirits facing the directions. I rattle once in each direction and say a heartfelt thank you.

I encourage you to gather your family and friends for a joint new moon ceremony if possible.

Full Moon (mother)

The full moon is designated as the mother aspect of the goddess because of its fullness, power and it is representative of fertility.

The full moon is a time for high energy and activity. A time for harvesting the fruits of the seed ideas that we planted around the new moon. A time to celebrate and to dwell in gratitude and appreciation for Self and accomplishments. The moon is full with possibilities and hope during this phase. Be sure to take advantage of it and to connect with the fertile, nurturing, and grounding energies of the Divine mother within.

This is a powerful time where energy is in abundance. Rituals and ceremony are amplified as energy is in its zenith. Enjoy this high tide of psychic powers and abilities, perception and divinations.

ceremony

Ceremony works best in a seven-day cycle. Around the full moon, three days before the night of the full moon, and three days afterwards. I prefer to do my ceremony on the actual night of the full moon. Fire ceremonies of release, celebration, and giving thanks to Mother Earth are perfect for this moon phase.

COLLECT - items to represent what you are releasing, celebrating and/or honoring. I like to leave an offering with the fire, such as a Despacho (a prayer roll with intentions and goodies for the earth and/or mountain spirits). If you are releasing something you may want to use a talisman in the form of a stick. Decorate it to represent that which you are leaving behind and gift it to the fire.

Or, if outside, I rattle four times in each direction before I say a prayer and call in the corresponding helpers and powers of each direction. This step can be a s simple as lighting a candle. Use red, brown, green or golden candles to represent the mother.

SET YOUR INTENTION - share your gifts/talisman with the full moon in your heart or audibly. I leave the ashes in the river or bury it deep into Mother Earth during the waning moon.

Have a feast with friends and love ones to celebrate the manifestation of your new moon intentions or your steady progress towards manifesting those.

Waning Moon (crone)

The waning moon is from full to dark moon. This is the time to end outworn relationships, situations and habits that have served their purpose.

The crone shows us where we are blocked in our lives. By taking her hand and accepting that some things must die, we are able to grow spiritually.

The waning moon is known as the crone or wise woman, she is represented as the aged mature being, rich with knowledge and experience.

The waning moon is known as the crone or wise woman, she is represented as the aged mature being, rich with knowledge and experience.

What we resist persists, as the old saying goes. I use this period of the month specifically for examining my blocks and fears. Let the crone lead you in studying your shadow side and in understanding that this side of you is necessary in order to have a balance in your life.

Dark Moon (crone)

The Dark Moon is the time when there is no solar reflection, leaving the lunar face in darkness. The duration of a dark moon is typically three days (depending on the orientation of the Earth and Sun) until the new crescent appears. The new moon occurs in the middle of this period.  As the moon wanes toward those final days of darkness, there's often a turn inward. This powerful and still time is fertile ground for the new moon intentions to germinate.

The dark of the moon is the most powerful time psychically. It seems to draw us in towards our deepest self, the longings of the soul, and restful listening is a great way to receive this guidance. A common analogy is the dormant seed under the winter snow, or the cocoon holding the butterfly. You might feel tired, or crave quiet and solitude. Make space for the unfolding of spirit at this time. You are preparing for a rebirth that begins with the crescent. Make it a sacred time for yourself each month, a time to connect with the great void of infinite potential.

My life has changed dramatically since I began to live and create following the cycles of the moon. You will notice how your relationship with the moon will grow deeper with practice and careful observation of the energies. Synchronicity, magic and powerful manifestation follow when you are in alignment. Explore it for a few months just to see what happens within and without. I promise you that it will have a positive effect on your life, your energy levels and creations.

Soulfully,

Victoria
