Peruvian Mesa Shamanism spans several traditions and countless centuries

When a Pachakuti Mesa is opened (ceremonially activated) the distinction between the symbol and that which the symbol represents is dissolved. The objects arranged upon the Mesa become the mountains, the rivers, the puma, or the empowered representation of the curandero’s own healing.
— Mathew Magee, Peruvian Shamanism The Pachakuti Mesa

Drawing on ancient Peruvian shamanic traditions, this session offers a deeply intuitive and sacred space for energetic clearing, realignment, and personal transformation.

The Peruvian mesa is a sacred, living altar and medicine bundle deeply rooted in the shamanic traditions of the Andes, especially among the Q’ero people, descendants of the Inka. It is not just a collection of sacred objects — it is a healing tool, spiritual ally, and portal to the unseen world.

what is the mesa?

Mesa" means table or altar in Spanish. In Andean cosmology, the mesa is a portable altar with sacred stones or objects that carry intent, healing power, and spiritual lineage.

It’s often used by paqos (Andean shamans) for healing, divination, prayer, and spiritual transformation.

components of the mesa

The Sacred Cloth (Unkhuna): A woven cloth, often hand-loomed, which wraps the mesa.

Khuyas: Sacred stones or objects, each infused with personal, ancestral, or elemental power. Each has a relationship with a direction, element, and energy.

Power Objects: Feathers, shells, bones, crystals, relics, or other items gifted by spirit or found through synchronicity.

Personal Items: Items carrying emotional or spiritual significance, anchoring the mesa to your life story and healing path.

Three-Fold Structure (Andean Cosmovision)

The mesa reflects the three worlds of Andean cosmology:

Hanaq Pacha (Upper World) – spirit, destiny, celestial allies

Kay Pacha (Middle World) – this living world, human life

Ukhu Pacha (Lower World) – ancestors, subconscious, deep healing

Objects are placed intentionally in the mesa to balance these realms — creating harmony and allowing access to guidance.

How the Mesa Heals

Energy Work

The mesa acts as a focal point for energy movement. The practitioner uses it to extract hucha (heavy energy) and infuse sami (light energy) into the client.

Stones may be used to pull out illness or transmit healing intent.

divination

The mesa can be consulted like an oracle, opening space for guidance from ancestors, nature spirits, or archetypal forces.

Becoming a Mesa Carrier

Carrying a mesa is a path of spiritual discipline and service.

Traditionally, initiates work through a series of rites and trainings, often over years, cultivating their mesa through personal healing, prayer, and guidance from elders or spirits.

The mesa grows as the carrier grows — it's a living embodiment of one's path.
